A Quick History of FBC

Terrell Baptist Church was started as a Baptist Ministry in 1876 by the Reverend J. B. Daniel. Terrell was growing quickly, thanks to the appearance of the Texas and Pacific Railroad, having had around 700 residents. The church start was the culmination of an idea that had been developing for many months. There were 13 original members, with new members being added regularly.

In 1879, the church purchased the southeast corner of Brin and Frances Streets for the purpose of building a sanctuary. The original building was opened in February, 1879 to a standing-room only crowd of about 50 church goers, with Dr. R. C. Buckner preaching

Eleven pastors served the church between 1883 and 1900. Membership rose to near 400. W. B. Kendall became pastor in 1900, bringing a renewed and refreshing spirit to the work of the church. In 1905, a larger sanctuary was completed to accommodate worship for the growing membership of the church. Dr. George W. Truett of Dallas preached the initial service. By 1919, church membership had grown to 753.

Church growth and mission involvement continued through the mid and late 1900’s. The current sanctuary was completed and opened for use in 1956. The stained glass windows from the building constructed in 1905 were removed and installed in the current sanctuary. Additional educational and fellowship space was added in 1988.

Ernie McCoulskey served as pastor from 1989 until January, 2006.  Ernie was called as pastor following the long-time service of Brother Art Fineout, who served from 1961 to 1989.  "Brother Ernie" resigned in early 2006 to assume the position as Director of Missions for our very own Kauf-Van Baptist Association.  Our new pastor, John Lowrie, begin his call as our pastor in June, 2006.  Under Brother John's leadership, we are experiencing a high level of excitement as together, we observe God moving in our midst.

In 2003, our latest building addition, the Recreation Outreach Center (ROC) was completed and dedicated into the service of the Lord.  This addition includes educational space, a dedicated youth area for student minsitry, a game room, craft room, dining room with full commercial kitchen, as well as a full-size gym equipped with stage and sound facilities.  The ROC has been a great addition to our ministry capabilities as a church.

Current resident church membership is around 800 members. Worship services average around 400, with Sunday School attendance averaging around 350 persons.
