What is Upward?
Upward is an evangelistic sports ministry designed to promote community outreach, develop volunteer leadership, and share the love of Christ with children and their families, using something as simple as a ball.
Upward is specifically designed for Kindergarten through sixth grade boys and girls. It promotes salvation, character, and self-esteem in every child. Upward provides opportunities for volunteers from all walks of life to become meaningfully involved in the ministries of the church by praying for the program, coaching teams, refereeing games, sharing devotions, and developing relationships in order to open avenues of ministry to the people of our community who participate in the program.
Enrollment for Upward occurs in the fall. Children complete an evaluation that is used to help place them on a team, seeking to maintain balance between the teams. Practices begin in December, with games being played in January and February. The season culminates with Upward Award Night in late February.
Teams practice once a week for an hour, on the same night and time each week. Games are played on Saturdays and last one-hour as well. Game times are also at the same time each week.
Players log equal playing time during games, and all players get a chance to start in games on a regular basis. Players on opposing teams are matched by skill and size during play to help keep match-ups competitive. Learning basketball fundamentals and team concepts are key aspects of Upward.
Registration continues for Upward Basketball & Cheerleading, though a late-registration fee applies to help us cover added costs for orders. Upward is for children in Kindergarten through the 6th grade. The registration fee is $70 which includes the added shipping for late registration. Registration forms and fees can be turned in to the FBC church office, located at 403 N. Catherine Street. The office entrance is on the Brin Street side of the building, and is open Monday-Friday from 8 am to 5 pm. Registration fees purchase the full uniform for children, along with their player kit with other items.
Cheerleading participants will complete an orientation session prior to beginning. Cheerleading orientation will be Tuesday, November 18 at 6:30 pm in the Dining Room of the FBC Recreation Outreach Center (ROC), located at 100 W. Brin St. All cheerleaders and parents are to attend.
